TASTE OF CLIMBING

New to climbing and not sure where to start? Our Climbing Intro offers the perfect place to begin your climbing journey.

This one-hour session gives beginners a taste of the exciting climbing on offer at 270.

Following a tour of the centre, we’ll get you on the walls. The session includes auto belay climbing and bouldering with elements that can be tailored around your needs, but as a guide – firstly we’ll give you an introduction to the auto belays in our dedicated teaching area. This will involve how to put on a harness correctly, then connecting to an auto belay, and how to climb and descend safely. We’ll also introduce and explain the grading system and support you through your first climbs on walls up to 11m high.

Then we’ll introduce you to the dynamic world of bouldering. Here we’ll cover how to climb and fall safely with the protection of our boulder matting, explain our grading system and teach you some fundamental climbing techniques to give you the best start to your journey.

As part of the intro session, one of our friendly, knowledgeable instructors will have taught you all you need to know to get you up on our walls in a safe manner, help you understand the key principles, explain the grading systems, and tell you all about the different types of challenges involved.

Whether it’s your first-ever time, or are just in need of a refresher, our Climbing Intro’s offer a way to learn the fundamentals of auto belay climbing and bouldering and cover basic safety and handy techniques.

Following the session you then have the rest of the day to hang out at the park – you can take your time and enjoy climbing our auto belays* or the bouldering walls, building strength and practising techniques, or refuel in our cafe bar if you before returning to the walls.

(*Will need to pass a belay check to be signed off).

Auto belays and bouldering explained…

Bouldering

Bouldering is a type of climbing, it’s pretty accessible and relatively simple to pick up the basics. The idea is you climb specific routes, called problems, to overcome by using a mix of both physical and mental power. Bouldering takes place on lower walls with thick crash mats below, therefore no equipment is required (no harnesses or ropes). All you need is is a pair of climbing shoes and some chalk to help with grip!  The BMC have a short article exlpaining more, to view, please click here.

Auto Belay Climbing

Auto belays are a mechanical system that allows a climber to ascend and descend the wall safely without the traditional need for another person to belay them from the ground.  The auto belay sits at the top of the wall, with a strong retractable tape that is attached to the climber via a harness before they start climbing at the base of the wall. This clever device automatically takes up the slack as the climber makes their way up and then catches the climber if they come off the wall and lowers them down in a controlled and safe manner.
